A classic for a mixed group of people.

My uni friends (3rd year AI majors) and I want to read a book together. However, we all have different reading experience. Some of us haven't touched literature since high school, while others read classics on a daily basis.

What would be a short book, with lots to talk about, that is suited for beginner readers but offers a intellectual challenge?
