Hi all, I recently have been getting back into reading after a concussion that set me back.
I'm looking for titles to read this winter that have fantasy elements, and ideally pull from folklore, fairy tales, or history. I am not a fan of romance, and would prefer titles that have it as a side plot or omit it entirely.
For context, some of my favourite titles are The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly, Starve Acre by Andrew Michael Hurley, and Stardust by Neil Gaiman.
While my favourite titles tend to have have darker themes, I can also get into "cozy" fantasy (?), and have enjoyed titles like Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree, Howl's Moving Castle by Dianna Wynn Jones, The Tea Dragon Society by Kay O' Neill, and The Girl and the Ghost by Hanna Alkaf.
tl;dr I want books with whimsical, folk-oriented magic that feel like a cabin in the middle of an ancient forest during the winter solstice.

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden is a great fit. It is a fantasy book based on Russian folklore and it does a great job capturing that mysterious cabin-in-the-woods-in-the-winter atmosphere.
The Snow Child
Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik
If you’re open to a play, Big Dog Publishing has a comedy called “The One True Goddess of Acropolis High” that you might enjoy. It stars gods and goddesses from Greek mythology in a quest for power both on and off the football field.
