Hello! I read “1984” a while back, and I enjoyed its ambience and narrative so much that I pretty much can’t read anything else since nothing evokes the same feelings as that, so I am looking for something new.
I quite enjoyed the select amount of characters in the story, as I find books with a ton of characters confusing, and I wouldn’t also mind fantastic elements of any kind.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be a dystopian story. Bonus points if the ambience is gloomy/mysterious
Apologies if this sounds too specific

    1. 1984 is in some ways quite unique in its atmosphere. Whether or not you can scratch that exact itch with something else… I’m not sure.

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is probably the closest thing to it that I’ve read. It’s also a dystopian novel from the perspective of someone who is on the periphery of the establishment.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (Blade Runner) by Phillip K. Dick can have a similar vibe, although the number of characters is higher.

Cat’s Cradel by Kurt Vonnegut looks at humanity’s hubris from an individual perspective. It keeps coming to mind when I try to think of similar books. It’s also speculative fiction, but on its face, it isn’t that similar. I don’t know why my brain keeps coming back to it, so I’ll include it anyway.
