really curious why is verity but colleen hoover consistently mentioned as a “bad book” or a book they “hate”?

i finished it yesterday from seeing a recommendation on reddit. i didn’t mind it but i am inclined to psychopathic/sociopathic female main characters. i didn’t like the first meeting. i felt it fell flat. jeremy is not sufficiently fleshed out and lowen is weak as a woman and a character.

wondering what it is that i might be missing in terms of perspective.
