Looking for book recommendations (obviously). I have realized I’m somewhat of a picky reader- I can’t stand books that “tell not show” or are predictable. For example I just read Broken Country which everyone raved over and I felt it was predictable and unoriginal. It’s frustrating how many books I start and then DNF because I cannot get sucked in.
Examples of writers/ books I love are:
David Mitchell
Emily St John Mandel
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
Jennifer Egen novels
Greenwood by Michael Christie
Donna Tartt novels

Have you read *The Wasp Factory* by Iain Banks?
Would whodunits interest you?
Most of your favorites are also my favorites, David Mitchell and Emily St John Mandel especially. I’ve read everything they’ve both written!
I’m watching this thread to see what other people recommend, but a few books I read this year that were surprising and unpredictable :
Martyr! – Kaveh Akbar
House of the Spirits – Isabel Allende
Geek Love – Katherine Dunn (not for the squeamish but I never could have expected literally anything that happened from page to page)
Pale Fire – Nabokov
The Wind Up Bird Chronicle – Murakami
(I find David Mitchell to be heavily influenced by Murakami, this one in particular).
