I’m looking for grimdark / very dark fantasy in a medieval-ish / epic fantasy setting (not urban).
I want books/series where the core storyline follows a female main character through extremely brutal conditions: systemic violence, humiliation, coercion, exploitation, torture/physical punishment, sexual violence themes, slavery, prostitution. Please do not describe scenes in detail — a high-level “what is present” and how central it is to the plot is enough.
What I mean (Witcher reference):
I’m referring to “The Lesser Evil” (The Last Wish), specifically the Renfri / Stregobor-in-the-tower storyline.
Key elements I’m looking for:
– a woman loses status/protection and is forced into street-level survival;
– she goes through exploitation and violence by people with power over her;
– the story focuses on her path and choices as she becomes an active agent (gathers people, uses force/threats, makes ruthless decisions), not just “healing afterwards”;
– the conflict is framed around power and impunity (who can hide behind walls, who pays with their body/life);
– the brutality shapes her trajectory and strategy across the narrative.
Preferences:
– Minimal religion/cult focus as the main axis (no crusade/prophecy/priesthood-driven plot as the core).
– Completed series preferred, standalones also fine.
When replying, please include:
1) Have you personally read the book/series (fully or partially).
2) Brief spoiler-light premise: who the female MC is and what she does across the plot.
3) Which heavy elements are present and how central they are (no scene details): torture/physical punishment, captivity, slavery, sexual violence themes, prostitution, systemic exploitation, maiming punishments, war/mass violence.
4) A non-graphic example of why you consider it “extremely dark” (e.g., “constant captivity/control”, “recurring punishments”, “world built around slavery”, “first half focuses on exploitation”, etc.). No scene breakdowns.
