I love this book, it’s all about when the maths goes wrong and causes massive problems. It has a light story teller tone that is really engaging and it explains complex maths concepts in accessible terms 🙂 totally would have enjoyed it when I was 12, and also enjoy it now in my thirties 🙂

*The Boy Who Loved Math* by Deborah Heiligman.
This is actually a picture book suitable for younger readers, but if it gets him interested in Paul Erdös, he might like to read one or both of the adult biographies: *The Man Who Loved Only Numbers* by Paul Hoffman and *My Brain is Open: The Mathematical Journeys of Paul Erdös* by Bruce Schechter.
