I recently have been reading tons of fantasy romance and sci-fi romance and two books that stood out to me were {Strange Love by Ann Aguirre} and {Tears of the Wolf by Elisabeth Wheatley}. I specifically loved that dogs played a part in the stories. They were talking dogs too but that's not a requirement for me.
I loved that the romance in Tears of the Wolf basically started out with him gifting his wife a puppy and I loved all the humor in Strange Love centered around her dog also getting a translator chip. I think other animal companions could work too. I loved the snake in {Blood of Hercules by Jasmine Mas} and I grew up reading Tamora Pierce books with lots of animal companions so that could be where this love is coming from.
Any ideas?

“A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World” by C.A. Fletcher. Sci-fi (apocalyptic) with a dog (obviously). Probably not much romance though.
The Knife of Never Letting Go is YA sci-fi and it has a talking alien “dog”
