My husband would like to read before bed rather than doom scroll but it’s a habit that’s hard to break. Hoping to find him a book or two for a holiday gift that he can get into. I know that when he read more he really liked John Krakauer books (especially Under the Banner of Heaven). He enjoys sci-fi and fantasy (huge LOTR fan) but I do not and wouldn’t know where to start. I wouldn’t want to get him anything too long to start (less than 400 pages?). Anything immediately leap to mind? Thank you!

The Wager by David Grann might really hook him. It’s a non-fiction survival adventure (not unlike Krakauer).
How about John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War or Redshirts? Both are a little over 300 pages. Both zip along.
Murderbot are very short books that quickly catch attention
The Vorkosigan Saga Lois McMaster Bujold,
Maybe start with a short JG Ballard novel like The Drowned World.
The answer is almost always Dungeon Crawler Carl. My brother who hasn’t read in 15 years started the series and finished all 7 books very quickly. It’s hard to put them down. And it’s jumpstarted his newfound love for reading and he has read about 15 books this year.
