Gotten to finish Simmon's first novel from 1985, "Song Of Kali", and is one of his stand alone novels, so not part of any series.
"Song Of Kali" follows an American editor of a literary magazine, and his family, as he is sent to Calcutta to seek out a manuscript by an Indian poet who has been missing for several years. Instead he finds himself in an ordeal he could never imagine in the chaotic and fetid streets of the city.
It's a pretty brutal affair for the most part, and moderately long, and is a pot boiler. The moments in this book obviously borders on the outrageous much of the time, but this is still a good debut novel.
So far I was only scratching the surface of Simmons's work when I read the first two installments of his Hyperion Cantos, but with "Song Of Kali" I've dug in just a little bit deeper. There are several other stand alone novels that he's published that might be even better, and some of those may include thrillers and more SF.
There's even a horror series that he's also done called, what else, the seasons of horror, which I'm very keen on checking out! There's also the few short story collections too that could also be of interest also.
And now after those bouts of horror it's time for some SF starting With Heinlein again!
