I am looking for a novel in verse for a 7th grader whose reading level is basically at or a little below grade level. The tricky thing is that she is very sensitive to books with heavy emotions, and a lot of novels in verse tend to have characters coping with trauma. She started reading Out of the Dust but had to stop because the mom and unborn baby dying was too much for her. The novels in verse I would normally consider for this age range (Inside Out & Back Again, A Long Walk to Water) would not be a good fit because they deal with similar things like death and war. Can anyone think of any light-hearted novels in verse that are at a middle grade or early middle school level?

you’re right, novels in verse do tend to cover tougher subjects! On the wiki page for verse novels theres a whole section of recent examples for teens, maybe one of those would suit? [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verse_novel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verse_novel)
from that list, maybe What My Mother Doesn’t Know, by Sonya Sones which is about a teens girl’s adventures in dating
or Maybe Song of the Sparrow by Lisa Ann Sandell, though it does have some warfare in it, being about the Arthurian legend of The Lady of Shalott (she gets shot by an arrow at the climax but survives)
