Looking for a list of historical fiction to read

I was wondering if anyone has ever come across a list or syllabus that takes you through the major events of the history of a country by reading fiction set in that time and place? I'm regularly frustrated by the gaps in my history, but am not that motivated by podcasts or textbooks. I'd love to cover all of British history, some American history, the time period around the soviet union and Middle Eastern hisotry particularly. But would be happy to learn about any region really. Has anyone seen a good thorough list like this?
