my cousin is 13 and thinks she might be queer in some way. i’d love some book recs for her that have queer characters as leads or as important characters that aren’t just the standard gay best friend. She’s only 13 so no spice but I’m not against romance in general. I was thinking heartstopper could be a good place to start? maybe I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston?
She’s currently reading the hunger games and enjoyed Harry Potter (but now hates JK Rowling as she should).

Verity Vox and the Curse of Foxfire. The MC is a teenage lesbian witch who saves an Appalachian town from a curse. No spice (I think there’s a single kiss?).
There are other forms of being queer than being gay or bi 😉
In *Loveless*, the MC is asexual, and it’s very affirming. Even if you’re not asexual, it does explore how labels are things we put on ourselves for the benefit of others.
Also, *The House in the Cerulean Sea* is very YA appropriate, funny, touching, and features a lot of queer MCs. It’s also fantasy-ish. No spice.
Princess and the Grilled Cheese it’s a graphic novel
