Like kids have done for decades before social media. They can always just go to a public library and ask for recommendations. Even if a public library isn’t available, schools should have a library.

I don’t think this ban applies to things like goodreads, storygraph etc

What did we do when we were 16? I just went to the library. Talked with my peers. Asked my parents. Etc. I just picked books that seemed interesting from the cover and/of the summary. I sometimes asked the librarians what was interesting. 🤷♀️

Just a little summary if you don’t feel like clicking: Under-16s in Australia were recently banned from using major social media services (e.g., Youtube, Tiktok, X, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.) This article says Platforms like BookTok (on TikTok) don’t just make recommendations but create communities where teens talk about reading and books and share their passions about them. Without them, any young people may not become interested in reading or at least not as much.
But this is just speculation of course, we just have to see how the ban affects the young individuals and whether there are other and better ways they can be encouraged to read.

I don’t mean for this to come off snarky, but booktok is absolutely not 16 and under friendly. The book suggestions are often dark romances.
Social media has probably hurt reading more than its helped.

> Under-16s will also still be available to view most content on online platforms which do not require an account.
