I run a book club at a bookstore outside of Philly. To keep things fresh, and if I don't have book suggestions from my group, I'll use the month "themes" to help pick out books (ie for Black History month, I chose "Music is History" By Questlove and will be doing "Jane Austen's Bookshelf" By Rebecca Romney for Women's History Month).
In the meantime, I was drawing a blank to pick out a fiction book for Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander month. I was doing the google searches, and considering I don't really fall into that demographic, I was nervous at picking a book that was just a terrible representation for this group. In my google search a book store that is based in Hawaii came up. Something in me was saying, go reach out to them. So I shot them an email telling them my situation and asking for book suggestions. I had an email from them this am with a bunch of book suggestions. I was over the moon!
So if you ever need specific book suggestions like this, go find a local bookstores and ask them for suggestions (and try to support them in the process!). They'll be more than happy to help you and they'll probably appreciate you asking them for the suggestions.
