hi, i absolutely love ursula k. le guin's changing planes and periodically listen to it on audiobook to go to sleep but i'm at the end of my current cycle of relistening where it's getting stale again and i'm wondering if i can find more like it to add to the rotation.
short stories that explore a fictional culture, or even just a weird phenomenon or idea that feels like a significant enough departure from reality that it's like they're describing another world, with somewhat little focus on individual characters except as framing devices or means to describe the concept are ideal. other books i know of in this vein are:
– "changing planes" by ursula k. le guin
– "always coming home" by ursula k. le guin (which is wonderful and one of my favorite books ever, but some of the descriptions go on a little long and so make it better suited to reading than listening)
– "star diaries" and "the cyberiad" by stanislaw lem (both of which would be pretty much perfect suggestions if i didn't already know about them, albeit very, very slightly more jokey than ideal)
– "cosmicomics" by italo calvino
– "a woman of the iron people" by eleanor arnason (even though this is a full on one-story novel and has like… long term stakes and characters and stuff and so isn't ideal for listening to with the intent of falling asleep it's still iconic to me when thinking about this style of book for how in-depth and fascinatingly it presents its alien culture. somebody recommended me this on reddit somewhere: if you happen to be reading this, thanks a bunch!)
i'd also take nonfiction about something cool if it somehow matches these criteria – the point isn't necessarily to escape reality, i just want to hear about weird places and things before i fall asleep. thank you!
