I just finished reading through the A Court of Thorns and Roses series. I’m a huge fantasy book fan but reading this scratched an itch I didn’t realize I had: mysterious, sentient, and intelligent monster.

The first book started with some nibbles of this with creatures like the bogge and the suriel. Then the second book gives you Amren, the bone carver, and the witch in the woods. For what it’s worth, I don’t really care for the romance. After finishing the series, I’m craving something else that scratches that itch for dark, mysterious creatures that this book series gave me so much of.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. ❤️

The Winternight trilogy by Katherine Arden – explores Russian folklore and a dark, mysterious being is a focus throughout the series.

I really enjoyed the Kate Daniels’s series by Ilona Andrews – they have lots of great creatures and monsters. There is romance, but it’s primarily an urban fantasy series.

I also second the Winternight Trilogy! Someone You Can Build A Nest In is another fantastical creature novel.

    3. I don’t think either of these are exactly what you are looking for, but your description of mysterious, sentient and intelligent made me think of them:

Leech by Hiron Ennes has a very interesting main character, as well as Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell.
