EDIT: Wow thank you all SO much!! Honestly every single one of the recs were perfectly on point, and now I even have some for his birthday in a few months. I’m really so glad I discovered this sub!

I decided I needed to add another gift for my dad this year and thought a book would be nice (last minute I know!), but would love suggestions as we have entirely different reading tastes and I truly don’t know where to start with book lists and what is actually good vs just being pushed by publishers in the bookstores. He mainly reads non-fiction.

He does like history. Particularly books that look at history to draw parallels to modern news/events. Particularly good memoirs from politicians, and I know he really liked “The Splendid and the Vile” by Erik Larson. I don’t think he’s read much else by Erik Larson so if there’s another of his books that’s an absolute favorite I’d love to hear it!

Another option: he recently retired (like a year or two ago), and has been struggling I think a bit with finding meaning in his life without all those working hours. Some sort of like thought piece on being retired might be interesting? I tried googling and only got gimmick-y sounding self-help books. He recently read a book (can’t remembered but based on the description I think it was “falling upwards” by Richard Rohr) on a recommendation, and said it really helped him see his next chapter of life in a new light. So something thought provoking like that (*not* “12 tricks retirees love for financial success!”).

    TIA!
