What with it being Tis the season, I've been reading A Christmas Carol. As you might know, it features a narrator who is not part of the story but gives his own opinions, descriptions and even jokes about events. I understand this was quite common in Victorian times.
Does anyone know of any more modern books with a similar storytelling style? I know there are stories with unreliable narrators but in those the narrator is actually part of the plot. I'm looking for modern stories where the narrator isn't part of the story but is otherwise almost like a character in themselves.
