His current read is Brief History of Intelligence by Max Bennett. Could you please help me pick a book for him. Thanks.

The Alignment Problem: Machine Learning and Human Values by Brian Christian
If he’s already reading A Brief History of Intelligence, I’d go with Life 3.0. It’s smart, very readable, and stays in the same AI/brain/future lane without being too heavy. Safe pick for a boss.
