Hello! I’ve been thinking a lot about my TBR for the upcoming year and books I want to read. I really enjoy mystery and thrillers in particular, as well as fantasy and sci-fi. I don’t care much for horror, I find it moves too slowly for my liking. I also want to be thrilled rather than scared/horrified. However, over the past year, I have found myself getting more into character focused books over ones that are action focused or otherwise focused on an external plot.

Stephen King has always been on my radar as a prolific author of mostly horror novels, however the plot summary of the first book of The Dark Tower series has always been one that’s intrigued me.

Additionally, I found out not too long ago that there’s a series of books referred to as the Holly Gibney series that sound part mystery, part thriller and a number of the books sound right up my alley.

So. Should I read the Holly Gibney series or the Dark Tower series? Do these books read more horror than I would be expecting or likely to enjoy here? Are there Stephen King books that do lean more thriller/fantasy that I should try first?

I don’t mind violence and blood and a little gore, but extreme blood and gore and body horror are hard no’s for me. (A scene that’s a couple pages involving say, cops investigating a dead body is fine. Someone dying on page is not preferable but it’s okay. The second half of the movie version of Carrie is too much.)
