This may seem an odd request, but I love sharing things about my American (western) culture and history with my wife (as she does with me for her Thai history). This includes arts like film and literature. I have shown her some classic movie staples that we all grew up on, especially if it's constantly referenced in pop culture like Wizard of Oz. I love to read and consume anything from modern authors (mostly horror) to classic literature and some classic must-reads. Her english skills are good, she lived in Australia for 10 years, and we mainly speak english at home. But the nuance of written literature can be quite flowery and complicated to a non-native speaker who came to english as an adult. But she likes learning and wants to expand her language skills. I often read with her and explain what the authors mean when speaking in metaphors or coloquialisms.

So my question is, to what would you recommend I introduce her that you think everybody should have read at least once in their life (from a western perspective)? Easy, fun reads that give her some insight into what we consumed growing up and learned to appreciate as adults.

    Thanks for any suggestions!!!
