The protagonist is a wallflower; a lonely observer telling an intimate story.

I’m not looking for overly philosophical but I would appreciate emotional depth (a lot), depth at all tbh. Or insights on real life but through the lens of an observer or introspective protagonist.

Books similar to Norwegian Wood actually. Japanese lit seems to hit to spot for me at times but not always.

I’m curious to know is Dostoevsky or Steinbeck go under this category in regards to complex psyche and difficult relationships; or just an air of “lonely man vs world”.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, definitely East of Eden by Steinbeck and Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky. If you like Japanese literature, I also loved Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto.
