This might be too specific. I’m not sure. I’ve been on a romance binge the past months and the characters were all starting to sound the same. They’re starting to blur together into one blob.
If someone could help me out, I’m looking for protagonists that are different, unique, surprising, insane, super intelligent, not what you expect, and maybe someone you dislike but whose journey you want to see through to the end anyway. Protagonists that surprised you, challenged the way you think, made you feel ugly emotions, or showcased personalities so different from your own. Those whose actions and decisions blew you away and stuck with you.
I’m open to any genre, but I’m a scaredy cat so I’m bad with outright horror. I can handle suspense and thrillers though! I’m also open to more romance, of course!

Geek Love
Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect I felt this the whole way through with the main character. It’s a novel about a future where AI has made everything easy and accessible, no one has to work and so on.
She isn’t obviously wrong or bad, she is very complex and I feel like a good amount of people would agree or disagree with her either way, but she makes some surprising decisions and at points I was totally shocked at what she was doing and I didn’t necessarily like it but I really wanted to see where it was going. Especially by the end, I was truly in a state of “why the hell would anyone do that?” She’s very intelligent, brave and resilient, but her motivations are really unusual and born of insanely unlikely past circumstances that shape who she becomes.
The Housemaid trilogy (movie just released for the first book saw it today)

– Flesh by David Szalay
– Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff. This one deals with a very complicated relationship and might be a nice foil to some of the super sweet romances you’ve been reading!
