I thought I knew and love this person, my support, my rock in hard times, my future companion of impending old age, inside and out.

Apparently not. The answer came without hesitation.

    -"Dragons of Autumn Twilight".

    -What now?

-"Dragons of Autumn Twilight". It's great- and really shaped my interest in scifi and high fantasy. Amazing books.

-I've never heard of this book. It's your favourite, most influential book from childhood?

-Absolutely. It's part of a series- There's over a hundred of them- they are so, so good- it's an adventure in an alternative universe… the magic… and they travel…and dragons… I actually think GRRR Martin copied the whole dragons coming back from this series- although of course I love Game of Thrones too- and I read Narnia and The Book of Three before when I was younger- didn't really connect with that stuff- and Lord of the Rings– so fucking boring. Dragons of Autumn Twilight is actually much better paced. And I never got into drama stories and poor orphan whatever you know.

I reflect a bit. Then I asked: -So what happened to them?

    -What?

-To the books. What happened? Are they not around anymore?

-No of course not- they're still writing. There's hundreds of them, although Dragons of Autumn Twilight is part of its own Chronicles- the others are Dragons of Winter Night and Dragons of Spring Dawn– they lined up a season with a time of day and there's gonna be a Dragons of Summer

I sipped my coffee and blinked- I feel like a whole new chapter of our relationship just opened up.

    1. The dragonlance chronicles! Loved that series when I was a kid. Soth was one of my favorite characters.

Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman are very good writers and were one of the top fantasy authors of their time.

Uhh… You say you’re surprised, but never explain what surprises you. What’s the point of this post? I just don’t understand…

    3. Congratulations on discovering this new side of your partner.

I read some Dennis Lehane books, specifically from the Kenzie and Gennaro series, because he’s my husband’s favorite author. He was so excited to hear my feedback. I’m glad I was able to share in that with him.

Dragonlance was not just my favourite series of books in my early teens, it was my life.

I got *Dragons of Autumn Twilight* bundled with the (not very good) C64 game based on it, and devoured it, that battered book came with me everywhere. And of course, the rest of the Chronicles in due course, and the considerably better Legends trilogy that follow them. Those six books are the core Dragonlance series and everything else, whether by Weiss and Hickman themselves or the vast numbers of other authors who wrote in the same universe, is parasitic upon them. I re-read them recently and although they are pretty outdated and creaky in many places, and rather problematic in others, they still hold up pretty well for a D&D merchandising line from the 80s – again, the Legends more than the Chronicles. They are in no way the equal of *The Lord of the Rings*, and like so much else from the period are very derivative of Tolkien without actually being anything like him, but they had a vitality about them that to my teenage eyes made them a lot more fun (though I’d never admit it).

Raistlin Majere is the greatest character in fantasy, and I will die upon that hill.

Oh, and the Deathgate Cycle by the same authors is even better. Though it’s twenty-five years since I read it, so it might not have aged well for all I know. But I have it on my shelves (took some finding too) so I’ll find out soon!

    5. Such an insanely good book and series. Most of the Dragonlance novels are phenomenal, but the absolute best are the original trilogy. Your partner has great taste.

    6. Similar story with me.

Shannara and Dragonlance are foundational to my love of fantasy.
I can’t ever recommend them, because I know they’re extremely rough and technically not very *good.*
But they will forever hold a place in my heart.

Dragonlance is set in the same world as Dungeons and Dragons, by the way. The Drizzt Do’Urden books are also part of the Forgotten Realms, which you may recognise.

    7. I hope your future life together will continue to be filled with unexpected and wondrous revelations.
Nothing worse than being bored in a relationship

    8. Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis wrote some enjoyable books there. The main trilogy was the most enjoyable IMHO.
