I like stories that are about strangers finding a makeshift family of their own I'd prefer if these stories had heavy themes like abuse, abandonment, or anything you can think of. I'd like if the book was fantasy but that's not needed for me to enjoy it.

It’s been a long time since I read it and it might not fit exactly the “found family” theme but it’s a good thought provoker. The young adult novel *The Barcode Tattoo* by Suzanne Weyn
The Pinballs has a lot of those elements, but isn’t fantasy
