I was pretty startled by the info at the end. From their survey results, they find that less than half of Americans have library cards. I find that distressing.
I also thought it was interesting, but made sense, that the ebook readers were concentrated among the heaviest readers.

Do audio books count?

So sad.

I read that many alone in December, but I am not an average US reader either. There are just so many ways folks can choose to spend their time, and if you didn’t grow up with readers in the house, I am sure that influences you as a reader.

This doesn’t surprise me. We live in a time of abundant entertainment options, if you do anything in your downtime other than read, you’re not reading 50+ books a year unless you’re retired or something like that.
Most people have multiple pastimes and hobbies and other forms of entertainment they go to at least some of the time.
Bit sad there are so many people not reading any books though.

This is a startling statistic. Even at my little sister’s school they don’t push their students to read books at all compared to when I was in school.

I mean, I go through reading phases. When I’m in a reading phase I’m a voracious reader and will read dozens of books in a year. Sometimes there will be years where I won’t have read anything.

Frightening. I’m sure our hijacked attention spans and cheap dopamine hits further contribute to the low stats. Burgeoning anti-intellectualism, book bans, and reductionist policies certainly don’t help.

If we count audiobooks I’ve read dozens of. If we only count actual reading then I only managed half of one.
