Not a book suggestion but I’m thinking of getting an E-reader. I’m in between kobo and kindle. I like that kobo can connect directly to your library but does Kindle has access to more books? Is the whole not owning the file thing that bad? Not getting kindle unlimited or the kobo equivalent, just buying books as I see fit)

Kindle can also work with your library via Libby.
I’ve never had a Kobo, but I had a Kindle Touch that I upgraded to a Paperwhite last year.
Frankly…I never buy books there. Admittedly, because in the last few years I bought a lot of books that I ended up disliking, I instead get the books elsewhere and upload them using SendToKindle.
My friend, though, just got the smaller version and she got her dad to put some books in it, and the dad added even more as a Christmas gift. My understanding is that if you can buy it on Amazon, you can get it for the kindle. And we don’t have the library/Libby thing where I am, but you can get the books there as well.

I used to have a kindle but switched to Kobo when I realized that Libby doesn’t work with Kindle (I’m in Canada)

Kindle works with your library through Libby, if your library uses Overdrive. Hoopla and CloudLibrary (I think) only work with non-Kindle, so Kobo would be fine. I have a kindle so I really don’t know as much about Kobo and how to use it.
Kobo has an online store. Amazon sells Kindle books. Titles are usually available in both formats, so it’s mostly about preference.
Kindle’s user interface can be annoying and loaded with suggestions that don’t interest you. Kobo is cleaner and less cluttered with stuff that you don’t care to see.

You can get the free Kindle app on your phone to check it out. I have a Kindle but only ever use it to stream shows when traveling. I read everything on the Kindle app on my phone.
If you’re Canadian, only Kobo will work to read Libby ebooks.
Reading Libby books on a Kindle is only for the USA.
I’m a Canadian and have both a kobo and a kindle. My kobo Clara colour is SO much better than my kindle paperwhite. My paperwhite is just over 5 years old but it is *struggling*. It’s SO slow, updates take forever, and I have about 400 books on it, which isn’t even 30% of the storage available (it’s at about 2GB used out of 8GB), but it takes foreverrrr to open them. Some friends of mine have 10 year old kindles that work so much faster than mine. I don’t know why mine is such a piece of 💩 but I’m using it until it dies. Which might be 2026 😩
My kobo? Absolutely perfect. So fast, updates take less than a minute, Libby ebooks work perfectly. I have over 700 ebooks on my kobo (kobo plus books as well), and have a LOT of storage left (last I looked, I have 28GB left out of 32GB).
If you are a Canadian and want to use an ereader for Libby ebooks, get a kobo. It’s so much better than a Kindle. Plus the kobo website is much easier to look for ebooks on sale! They have a dedicated section and there are loads of books to buy for $0.99-$2.99cad every day. That’s how I buy my ebooks
