I started reading again a couple of years ago. I'm 37 now, and I was a voracious reader as a child. I went about 15 years without reading a single book. Currently, I mostly read thrillers or horror, but lately I've been wanting to immerse myself in a book series. I want to follow the lives and stories of the characters across several books. It can be a series of any genre; I just want to have a LOT to read and want to read book after book in the series.

The First Law by Joe Abercrombie. Three books to start, then three standalones, then another trilogy – all in the same world with returning characters. It reads like a thriller wearing fantasy’s skin. Morally gray everything, plot twists that actually land, and characters you’ll think about in the shower.
Fair warning: you’ll finish the first trilogy and immediately need more. That’s the obsession kicking in.
Last year I read through Sara Donati’s “Wilderness” series which starts with “Into the Wilderness”. It’s historical fiction with a dash of romance. The books follow a family for generations. What I also discovered is that some of her other series tie back in to characters in the Wilderness series to create a whole world of characters. I ended up reading 8 of her books last year.
Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere has potential for you
Towards the end of last year, I got into the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. I HIGHLY SUGGEST it to anyone! If I tell you a synopsis It’ll sound ridiculous, but it’s one of the best series I have ever read and the pages just keep turning!
The Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian
“The best historical novels ever written.”―Richard Snow, New York Times Book Review
Patrick O’Brian’s twenty-one-volume Aubrey/Maturin series has delighted generations of devoted fans, inspired a blockbuster film, and sold millions of copies in twenty-four languages. They have often been described as a single, continuous narrative and a literary achievement
Discworld is probably the best humourous fantasy ever written. It’s also 42 books long and we still haven’t finished the list of all the obscure references Terry Pratchett included, so you can spend an arbitrarily large amount of time on it. The stories are mostly independent, I’d recommend starting with Wyrd Sisters (Macbeth pastiche from the witches’ point of view) or Guards! Guards! (hard boiled detective fiction in a fantasy world)
Beau Vaughn Troutman’s [Ticket To Ride series](https://tickettoridebook.com)
I’m really enjoying the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy.
I was in the same boat then I read Red Rising. Damn what a great series it is. The description on the back doesn’t sound that great but it’s really good
I second Red Rising.
Also any SJMass series.
Check out Robin Hobb, I listened to the Liveship Traders trilogy on audiobook last year and loved it. I’m listening to her Farseer trilogy soon. Her books all take place in the same world.
I recommend the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. I laughed, I cried, and then I read it again.
Wheel of Time and Outlander are two of my favorite series and both have a number of books (but outlander series is still being written – I think waiting on the last one)
Dark Tower series by Stephen King. Following Roland, Eddie, Jake and Susannah is one of my favorites. Nice and long too.
I was really into the Mike Bowditch Mysteries.
Hi, do you have a moment to talk about our lord and savior, GC, BWR, NW, Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk?
Check out Dungeon Crawler Carl. It’s a great ~~cult~~ series. Currently 7 books of an anticipated 10. Sci-fi/fantasy, vulgar, hilarious, nonstop, and a million times better than it has any business being based on the premise and tone.
The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik is great.
Cradle by Will Wight is also good.
Both of these series are completed so you won’t have to wait.
Patrick O’Brian’s 20 book Aubrey/Maturin series (starting with Master and Commander) is as good as historical fiction gets; fans call a full read through a “circumnavigation” and it is so good many have done multiples .
MURDRUM DUOLOGY is a state of the art forensic crime thriller murder mystery series inspired by true events. The pace is fast with no predictability.
Outlander !!
The Expanse series by James SA Corey. It’s an epic sci-fi/space opera series. There are 9 books, plus a bunch of short stories (which are also collected in single volume). All the books are great, and they do a nice job of wrapping up the story lines up at the end.
Also, if you are into audio books, the audio versions are top notch.
The Marionettes!!! Books 1-2 you’ll devour
Red Rising series.
Broken Earth, Abhorshen, Discworld, Roots of Chais, Shadow and bone
Peter Grainger has a great English police procedural series following DC Smith who is in his 60s; he helps his team of younger detectives gain expertise in solving crime.
The Jack Reacher series — especially the earliest ones — by Lee Child is very plot driven but excellent.
Try the Jack Caffrey books by Mo Hayder. Start With Birdman. Seven books all together. Fantastic and horrifying.
