Basically, novels with gripping, engaging, eventful, page-turning plots, that are also generally considered more on the “literary” than the “genre” side of things. They don’t need to be highbrow, just well-written. Any era, classic or contemporary.
I know this is pretty broad so go in whatever direction feels right to you!

Wilkie Collins is very good for this, especially The Moonstone, The Woman in White, and No Name. Also Raymond Chandler if he’s literary enough.
