Hello all.
For a while now I have been considering venturing into the world of books. I’m 38yo and haven’t really read any novels since I was a teenager, not for a lack of interest per se – I actually did quite enjoy reading growing up – but just because I’ve put all my time and energy into video games instead.
But on and off over the years I’ve thought about trying to get into reading again and I think I am finally going to do it now, because taking up a new interest sounds appealing to me at this point in time of my life.
My problem is, I guess, that I don’t really know much about the book world and so frankly have no idea where to start. Unless it’s a big name series like DiscWorld or Dune or what have you, I haven’t heard about anything and so simply don’t know where to begin. Besides, I may be aware of things like Dune or DiscWorld but I don’t actually know much about them.
For now I want to begin with fiction and maybe look into a series or two, just to get my feet wet so to speak, but I’m not against non-fiction and will probably add that into the mix as I start to explore what’s out there a bit more.
Since I don’t know what’s out there, I thought about using video games as somewhat of a reference point, but at the same time I feel like that is restrictive in a way, in the sense that I’m sure there’s many different worlds out there that I don’t know about, that I can’t even comprehend because I’m just not familiar with them in the same way I am in the video game space. So I’m a little reluctant just in case it skewers my perspective a bit.
But since I’ve got nothing else to go on, I’ll mention some games I like just so you guys can get a sense of where my tastes lie. I already plan on getting the book tied to the upcoming game Exodus – although I have zero idea if it is any good or not – just as a start, and yes I’m aware of The Witcher’s origins which I might consider but maybe as a second or third wave as I think I want something new (to me) to begin with.
Anyway, games I like include Mass Effect, Fallout, BioShock, Elder Scrolls, Cyberpunk, Metroid and Zelda, Final Fantasy, Last of Us, Tomb Raider, smaller games like Still Wakes The Deep, Edith Finch, Sea of Stars and so on, Red Dead Redemption (especially 2), Hogwarts Legacy and Remedy’s games. Among many others.
Just recently news went up that Mistborn was being shopped around to game studios for a potential game, so I’m also vaguely aware of that – is that series worth looking into?
Any guidance here would be greatly appreciated. I have no problem taking a chance on something but with so many things out there I just don’t know where to start to kick off this new little pursuit I want to do. While I’m not against reading singular books, I also prefer longer form content and really sinking my teeth into a world, so I don’t know a trilogy or a series would be most ideal, I think. But I am open to any and all suggestions.
Thank you in advance.
