So I just finished Kingdom of Sweets by Erika Johansen and I’m in love! It’s marketed as a fantasy but it’d do better in the horror section. So I’d like a book that is dark fairytale retellings but also has substance and does something new and creative with the retelling. So nothing like once upon a broken heart or the caraval series bc I feel like those series have no substance (sorry).

    1. Angela Carter is the queen of dark fairytales imo!

      But also:

      The Child Thief by Brom

      Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth

      Deathless by Catherine M Valente

The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

White as Snow by Tabitha Lee

      Deerskin by Robin McKinley

Bryony and Roses by T Kingfisher

    2. Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik: it’s loosely based on the Rumpelstiltskin fairy tale and definitely has darkness + substance.
