I love reading but I find that I can’t really spend hours reading at home because I start to feel too idle. It’s annoying when I know I could finish my book by the end of the day but I just feel like a zombie after a while. I usually read on public transport which is the only time I can read for a sustained period of time.

I was wondering how people read at home, like do you have a special set up, does music help? What do you do to feel cozy and comfortable while reading books?

I have the same problem and found that changing positions every chapter or so really helps – like switching between my bed, couch, and even sitting on the floor sometimes. Also keeping a drink nearby makes it feel less “stationary” somehow, plus having natural light from a window instead of just lamps makes a huge difference for me

    2. Your post makes it unclear if this is a problem with physical discomfort, mental fatigue, or just distraction. There are different answers for all three.

I almost always have lofi music playing while I read because I find that helps me focus.

I also take a lot of breaks while reading. I’ll read for like 20 to 30 minutes and then take a break were I can stretch, do something else, move, etc. before jumping back in for another 20 or so minutes.

    4. Read while walking on a treadmill. That’s what I do. You don’t have to be going super fast, even 1mph is fine. I get that zombie feeling sitting too long.

What works for me is taking breaks between chapters. Stretch. Get up and move about. Water the indoor plants. Empty the dishwasher. Anything to allow myself a quick change in position and activity. And you can be thinking about the book while doing one of those quick things. Consider new things you learned in the previous chapter. What you’re hoping to find out in the new chapter. Beyond that, when I get settled in again, it always helps to have a blanket tucked really tightly around my legs. Helps me focus.
