He LOVES lord of the rings but doesn’t really read anything else. I want to get a book that’s similar that he can get into.
He loves the lore behind lotr and how complex and deep the world is. He also is a very black and white person and I think he likes how the story (mostly) divides the hero’s and villains. What is a similar book that I could get for him that would be engaging for someone like him?

Hyperion by Dan Simmons!
Storm Light archives is at 5 very thick books (almost 6k pages in total so far) with plans for more in the series. He is on hiatus with the series for 7 seven yrs (6 at this point I think) the Cosmere is a big universe with stand alone books and series.
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
I’m pretty sure I’m stating the very obvious, but if he hasn’t read the Silmarillion, it’s literally the extended backstory / lore for Lord of the Rings. On the off chance he hasn’t read it, here is your slam dunk answer.
Try Dune.
Red Rising Series. Epic Sci-Fi. Get him the first three books.
