I want to study how to write a haunted house in a way that is genuinely unsettling and scary— I also would love to find horror that involves a subtly claustrophobic and unsettling family dynamic! Ideally both but not necessarily.
I’ve read and LOVED: The Haunting of Hill House, We Have Always Lived in the Castle
I’ve read and enjoyed: The Shining, September House, Horrorstor (the latter two don’t really fit this description)
I’ve heard great things about House of Leaves but had trouble starting it, like most people haha
It does not have to be a typical haunted house. For example, I really adored Toni Morrison’s Beloved! However, if you can think of a classic, tropey haunted house book that actually delivered and scared, I’d love to know.
Ideally, the house is a major conduit for the horror in some way, not just a vehicle for ghosts.
Thank you in advance!
