The Read Harder Challenge this year includes "Read a romantasy book with a queer and/or BIPOC main character." My two least favorite genres are romance and fantasy 😭

I'm not worried about the romance part – although I don't read traditional bodice rippers, I do read a lot of contemporary romance and fanfiction. High fantasy is the one that always gets me, with all the complicated names and backstory and lore. My brain just bounces right off of it. For these challenges I usually try to find something with a realistic twist like a school of magic or the Dresden Files, which feels more digestible.

I do love a good queer love story, and Priory of the Orange Tree looked possible until I saw it's 859 pages! So I guess I'm looking for shorter and more contemporary, that works as a standalone. YA feels like it would be a great choice since I love queer YA. Any suggestions?
