I want something that’ll make me think about the state of humanity through a relationship with other sentient life. Maybe even something that’ll freak me out a little.

I’m new to the genre, but I adored Octavia Butler’s Lilith’s Brood trilogy. It was unsettling, uncomfortable, and really reflective too. I prefer protagonists who are women, or queer, but I’m open. Do you have any recommendations like this?

    1. Reading your first lines I was about to recommend Butler’s trilogy, but there it was on your second paragraph.

So, so so good, one of my favorite series of all time for sure. Sadly I don’t have other suggestions that are as good and insightful as this, but hopefully others will – just wanted to fangirl about Octavia Butler and the Oankali, sorry!

    2. AelinTargaryen on

Project Hail Mary, protagonist is a man, it won’t freak you out but it will definitely make you think about humanity.

    3. Nnedi Okoirafor’s Binti books — it isn’t humanity’s first contact but our FMC’s first
CJ Cherryh’s Chanur Saga is from the pov of an alien species having first contact with a human. In their species only women go to space.
