I'm not typically a fanatasy reader, but I've loved reading local myths and legends and fairytales since I was little, the more obscure the better.

So recently I gave "The Bear and the Nightingale" a try and really loved the concept of these little beings from slavic folklore just being everywhere. I also loved how creepy the Upir scenes were. Sadly, although I still liked her character, I didn't like how Vasya felt a little bit like a trope to me. I think I just don't like it when the MC themselve is this a "chosen one" archetype or is seen as someone more special than everyone else.

Any recommendations? I usually read horror but would like to give fantasy another try. I would prefer European folklore, but am open to everything from everywhere. Would love for it to be a weird read, just as weird as folklore often gets. Thanks in advance!
