I would like to see how a person different than me perceives themselves. Thats why I am looking for preferably not very long, “self aware” autobiographies where author more than sharing his life choices contemplates why he made them. What shaped their psyche?

I would like to be a writer but so far anytime I have a main character they’re inspired by me more than I want.

I think seeing reasoning, motivation and feelings of someone other than me might give me perspective on not just how to write a character not inspired by me but also on people in general.

I get that we are more in the psychology territory – which is fine by me, but it would be great if the book still had fun aspects in it.

    1. Maybe look into the memoir genre?

*Marley and Me* by Grogan (way better than the movie!)

      *Drunkard* by Neil Steinberg

*Refuse to Drown* by Kreider (warning – tough book to read)

Also – most first books have some autobiographical-ness to them, since we write what we know 🙂

    2. Alright, I do not give this book my full-throated recommendation, because I’m pretty sure a ton of it is bullshit, but I don’t think that matters for what you want it for. *Confessions of a Sociopath: A Life Spent Hiding in Plain Sight*.
