I’m not a big fan of books where every chapter is a predictable empty cliché (not to stereotype chic-lit books but they often feel like that!).
What are the best love stories you’ve read that don’t fit this genre? I really like David Nicholls books as an idea for what I’m looking for (One Day, Sweet Sorrow, The Understudy, You are Here). They can also have any other plot genre (fantasy/sci-fi/historical fiction) etc. I read them all, I just really dislike any books that are GLARINGLY obvious how it will end from the first chapter. (Also really enjoyed the Song of Achilles for an idea of another unpredictable romance).
No issue with the story ending happily for the couple, but take me on an unpredictable journey to get there!
Edit to add: Homeseeking by Karissa Chen was another beautiful newer book I read last year
