Something Like The Club Dumas

I read The Club Dumas awhile ago and was looking for something similar – somewhat historical, somewhat a mystery, somewhat occult.

I picked up Shadow of the Wind because that seemed to be the one most recommended as close to Dumas but I’m not enjoying it – just trying to plow through to the end. I don’t like the writing style and I’m not really looking for a bildungsroman.
