I’m looking for books about WW2 and I’m not even sure where to start!

Edit: I guess I should bee a little more specific about what I like. I usually read thrillers that are dark, suspenseful, and gruesome. Thanks for all the suggestions!

*Code Name Downfall: The Secret Plan to Invade Japan—and Why Truman Dropped the Bomb* by Thomas B. Allen and Norman Polmar.

*The Coming of the Third Reich* by Richard J. Evans.

    2. It’s historical fiction but based on a true story: Code Name Helene. It’s from the perspective of a wealthy Australian woman who joined up with the French resistance and was instrumental to their cause. Excellent book.

    3. I just finished reading *The Nightingale*, which is historical fiction about two French sisters living under Nazi occupation, one of them becoming a key resistance spy. Cannot recommend it enough.

    4. A few more.

The last stand of the Tin can sailors.

And Band of Brothers, D-Day, Pegasus Bridge all by Stephen Ambrose.

This may not be a traditional suggestion but Slaughterhouse-Five blew me away. It’s more about how WW2 affected a guys brain and is definitely an anti war novel. There are scenes during WW2 though. I honestly couldn’t put the book down and read it on a single flight. It’s also not a long book.

      For Axis perspective:
Unknown Soldiers is an awesome Finnish book with a fantastic English translation. It’s about the Continuation War (that’s what Finns call the WWII portion of The Winter War). Sooo good! Probably R rated.
Sniper on the Eastern Front was the best sniper book I’ve read. Probably MA rated (it could make me feel icky)

James Holland and Max Hastings both cover WWII military history. There’s a ton of books published between the 2 authors.

Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose is a must read.

      Leningrad by Anna Reid

      Ravensbruck by Sarah Helm

      Code Girls by Liza Mundy

When the Sea Came Alive: an oral history of D-Day by Garrett Graff
