The books are usually about highly competent groups of people in remote bases dealing with something that they don't understand and is constantly surprising them. Bonus points if they do the late-90s/early 2000s thing and have the base be "fully computerized" and controlled by a nerd in a tropical shirt a la Jurassic Park.
