I’m looking for books about people in countries during hard times. Preferably memoirs or historical fiction, and I love when the books are centered towards children coming of age.
I’ve read books about Japanese Internment Camps, the Holocaust, oppression in the middle east (love Iran), slavery, North Korea, etc. It can also be books with corrupt governments (sci fi included).
I’d like it to be as realistic as possible, as I love learning.

Though the Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood, is fiction, I heard that she made sure everything that happens in the book had already happened somewhere in the world when she wrote the novel.
See if you can get your hands on any actual Holocaust testimonials. These were generally given orally by survivors but often then put on paper. I’ve found three testimonials given by my own cousins. They’re shorter, of course, but very real. (They’re invaluable for those trying to do their genealogy because the person giving the testimonial always does their best to remember all the names of those in the family who did not survive.)
