Hey everyone,
I (F, 23) am taking a “Women in American Literature from the 20th century” class this semester. For the class, we have to choose an author in this genre and write an in-depth research paper. I'm having a hard time figuring out which author would be the most fun for me. To be honest, most of my favorites are from a different time period/male. Any unique/less popular recommendations?
My favorite Authors are: Dostoyevsky, Steinbeck, Tolstoy, and Charlotte Brontë.
Classic female American authors I've read: Virginia Wolfe, Margaret Atwood, Sylvia Plath, and Toni Morrison.

Why not Toni Morrison?
Shirley Jackson is my absolute favorite female author
Lois McMaster Bujold
Carson McCullers?
Ellen Glasgow is a great writer who has been unjustly forgotten. (Also, Virginia Woolf is English and Margaret Atwood is Canadian.)
Octavia Butler
Some of my favs
* Octavia Butler
* Toni Morrison
* Harper Lee
* Alice Walker
* Amy Tan
Frances Mayes would be fun, I think.
Robin Hobb
atwood is canadian i believe, but i think octavia butler would be on my list. joan didion was a crazy good stylist in prose, and ursula k. le guin is sort of a standard i believe… following to see what others say as well
What about Octavia Butler? Most of her works were published in the 20th century. A few works were published in the early 21st century.
I love Steinbeck, too! These authors might feel similar: Willa Cather, Barbara Kingsolver, Louise Erdrich, Leslie Marmon Silko
Edna Ferber
Ursula le Guin
Louise Erdrich
Margaret Atwood is Canadian. Octavia Butler would be a good choice.
