I’m a Bostonian lit major realizing I haven’t read enough Irish novels, poetry, folklore, etc. Please share some recommendations! I’d read a few Samuel Beckett and James Joyce but that’s as far as I’ve gotten. Thanks.
Flann O’Brien’s the Third Policeman and At Swim, Two Birds.

Ireland has a rich literary history but also some great contemporary stuff—I loved Trespasses by Louise Kennedy and the Rachel Incident by Caroline O’Donoghue.

Claire Keegan’s Small Thibgs Like These. Stunning book. Novella actually so a quick read. But powerful!

The Bee Sting by Paul Murray – it’s long but so so worth it. A family drama.
Panenka by Ronan Hession and The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne
Also would add Sally Rooney, Niall Williams, Sean Hewitt, and Claire Keegan

I read Prophet Song by Paul Lynch last year and cannot stop thinking about it. Brilliant.

Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce easily his most accessible work.
