For example recently read Flowers for Algernon recently and really enjoyed it.
I’m looking for sci fi books grounded to earth / reality, rather than a space adventure.
Edit: I’m also a slow reader and new into a habit of reading so I’m looking for content that is easy to read and nothing that is a slow burn for now.

If you wanted something with humor BUT with heart, I recommend Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman.
It has space political drama but the plot is an earth based hunger games reality show.
Connie Willis, Zenna Henderson, and Naomi Kritzer routinely do Earth and near future based SF.
If you want a classic, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
For something equally classic but with a horror twist (if you can tolerate Lovecraft’s racism) is Herbert West, Reanimator.
*Daemon* by Daniel Suarez
A billionaire game designer writes a computer virus to drastically reshape society after his death. Different camps decide to embrace the new world or try to twist it to meet their wishes.
*Change Agent* by Daniel Suarez
In a near-future world with ubiquitous and hyper-advanced genetic engineering, a detective who investigates illegal gene editing rings is sucked into the genetic underworld after being targeted by one of the world’s most notorious criminals
Basically, any Phillip K. Dick. His early stuff was space-y but his later works, which are his best and most well-known, are not at all like that.
Also, Ray Bradbury and Harlan Ellison and more recently, Neal Stephenson.
Elizabeth Moon _Speed of Dark_ might be a good compare/contrast
