I like crime fiction/detective fiction, but I can't deal with a lot of gore, e.g. I love Val McDermid's Karen Pirie books (Pirie runs the cold case unit, so there's not a lot of current violence), but am avoiding her Tony Hill books because apparently the violence is pretty brutal.
I recently tried a Louise Penny book – and that's how I realised I have a 'cosy' limit. I started 'Still Life' but found the level of cosiness suffocating. (No shade on anyone who likes them – they're just not my cup of tea.)
I recently did a reread of my favourite Agatha Christies, so that scratched the itch for a bit. I'm currently rereading my fave Sherlock Holmes stories.
I don't care how old the recommended books are. I just want some clever, engrossing and well-written crime fiction/detective fiction without too much graphic bloodshed (or really gross ways of killing people, etc.)
