With a sprinkle of romance thats not cringey or the main plot, though thats not needed. AND A HAPPY OR ATLEAST WELL WRITTEN ENDING! I really want to appreciate a well written MC whos consistent and is developed, evil MC or good idm that, but I want them to make sense. I dont read often but I adore movies and shows that really hit me in the feels, Ive realised books with war really do that. Some mature romance also adds to the pain which is nice! I dont read, but some shows Ive watched that I thoroughly enjoyed are AoT, and so far, Vinland Saga. It doesnt have to include war, but character development and relationships and very high stake situations are huge, and flawed characters are AMAZING when done well, and seeing the consequences of actions is nice.
TL;DR a book that makes you feel like an empty shell of yourself once your done reading (but hey happy endings are also welcomed! ðŸ˜)

The Poppy War trilogy by RF Kuang will absolutely destroy you emotionally – it’s basically fantasy AoT with war crimes and trauma that stick with you for months. Fair warning though, the ending isn’t exactly “happy” but it’s brilliantly written and Rin is one of the most flawed, consistent MCs you’ll ever read about
Try the Broken Earth Trilogy by NK Jemisin.
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo . Has some intense and dark plot lines with a bit of romance. Multiple POVs and it’s a duology.
