Reading about heroes and cookie cutter good guys is starting to feel repetitive and boring to me. I am looking for stories that follow a character who was once good or at least ordinary but slowly deteriorates due to life experiences or internal conflict. I am especially interested in morally gray characters and a psychological decline where the change feels subtle and realistic. It does not have to be a traditional villain origin story, just a believable descent.
I would prefer if there wasn’t some type of redemption arc or resolution but if it is done well i am open to it. The book can be any genre!

Lisey’s Story and Duma Key both by Stephen King are about the MC’s descent more towards obsession or potential madness than evil if that counts.
